Know Your Worth: Insights from the FAIR P(L)AY #3 event

DutchCulture has played an active part in EUNIC NL's FAIR P(L)AY cycle of events, coming to a close last October. Here are our takeaways and tips & tricks.
By Simon de Leeuw

The last edition of the FAIR P(L)AY events, taking place during Dutch Design Week, focused on questions such as: how do you establish yourself as a designer? What makes a professional? How do you know how much your work is worth? How does this affect your creative practice? As an artist or designer, unpaid work for “exposure” or compensations below the minimum wage in the form of vouchers still seems commonplace. It’s time to change this.

I’m happy that nowadays this discussion is out in the open, also on behalf of institutions. A big takeaway is to be active and dare to ask in order to find your way and solve your problems

What’s next?

Fortunately, there are some warmly welcomed promising policy developments for the cultural field. A quick glimpse at the news shows that fair remuneration for cultural workers features on the agenda, both in the Dutch sector and in the European Parliament.

In the meantime, the voice of the cultural workers directed at funders rings loudly for fairness and a better understanding of the value of artistic work, in Platform BK's so-called Call to Open Calls.
